I am a big believer in the Liberal Arts and the teaching and research model promoted in small liberal arts institutions. I have had the privilege to be both a student and a faculty member in such institutions. As a student, my education allowed me to explore areas of interest I did not even know existed, eventually leading me to a career in academia. As a professor, the ability to pursue my intellectual interests while challenging students to expand theirs, bringing students into the research process, and teaching courses that broaden my own knowledge and interest beyond the scope of my research are key aspects of why I thoroughly enjoy teaching at a small liberal arts institution. Having to strike a balance between teaching and research makes me a better teacher and a better researcher.
